Jeancarlos Rivas is a young political leader and Venezuelan activist, and a member of Voluntad Popular in La Guaira state. On June 14, 2024, at the age of 19, he was arbitrarily detained by security officials inside his residence in La Guaira state, following his participation in political activities promoting voting ahead of the July 28, 2024 presidential elections. He was subsequently accused of the crimes of instigation to hatred and criminal association, allegations that his family, representatives, and human rights organizations rejected, considering them a criminalization of his political and youth participation. During his imprisonment, he remained deprived of liberty in El Helicoide, the headquarters of the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (SEBIN) in Caracas. National and international organizations denounced his case as part of a policy of persecution against young activists, human rights defenders, and members of opposition organizations. After remaining detained for approximately 20 months, Jeancarlos was released in February 2026, reuniting with his family following a process marked by allegations of arbitrariness and violations of due process.
