Urselis Valdez was a victim of state violence on September 8, 2022, when she witnessed the extrajudicial execution of her son, Omar Daniel Pérez Valdez, during a police operation carried out by officials of the National Bolivarian Police (PNB) in Caracas. According to her testimony, Omar Daniel was unarmed and had surrendered when officers shot him, despite her pleas to spare his life. Following the murder, authorities presented the incident as the result of an armed confrontation, a version that the family has systematically rejected. Since that day, Urselis has led a tireless search for truth and justice, publicly denouncing the circumstances of her son’s death and supporting other mothers whose children have also been victims of alleged extrajudicial executions. Through the organization Madres Poderosas (Powerful Mothers), she has transformed her personal loss into advocacy work against impunity and in favor of the rights of victims’ families. Years after the murder, she continues to demand accountability and denounces the lack of effective judicial responses.
