Jecson Ricardo Cariel García was arbitrarily detained on August 5, 2022, in San Cristóbal, Táchira state, without a warrant. According to the testimony of his brother, Jean Carlos Cariel García, during the procedure security officials planted a small amount of explosive material on him to falsely link him to terrorism offenses. Since then, he was held in El Helicoide, where he remained for nearly four years while facing a judicial process characterized by repeated delays and the absence of evidence to support the accusations against him. Various national and international organizations classified the case as a judicial setup, denouncing violations of due process and the use of the penal system to arbitrarily criminalize the accused. On June 3, 2026, he was transferred to La Planta detention center and subsequently released, along with Jackson Vera, after nearly four years of arbitrary detention. His family members have noted that his release was the result of persistent advocacy by relatives, human rights organizations, lawyers, and the media, while continuing to demand the freedom of all others detained for political reasons in Venezuela.
